Do you know what the hottest set of wheels is right now? It’s got that particular logo that makes you think of screen screechers like race ace Herbie and Transformers’ Autobot. But no, we’re not talking about the Beetle. Instead its Volkswagen’s other bestseller, the Polo.

The German company’s latest incarnation of its popular supermini car was recently chosen as European Car of the Year by a panel of journalists from various automobile magazines such as Stern (Germany), Auto (Italy), Autocar (UK), and L’Automobile Magazine (France). Thinking of buying a car? If an award-giving body is right, the best cars to buy are Volkswagen and Ford. And Toyota? Sorry, but the road doesn’t lead there.

According to the recent 2009 Total Value Awards, Volkswagen and Ford topped their Total Value Index (TVI) among more than 48,000 buyers of 2009 models from September last year to March this year.

The TVI was made based on assumptions regarding expected reliability, fuel economy, price, etc. vis-à-vis ownership experience. In other words, the true value of the vehicle is equated as the worth of the vehicle’s attributes against its costs. continue reading…

Here’s a story about the little car that could. Volkswagen, maker of the Beetle, is now the world’s largest automaker as it overtakes long-time giant Toyota.

According to a report by IHS Global Insight, the German company managed to beat their Japanese rival as they produced 4.4 million vehicles ranging from the Golf, Polo and the Passat from the start of 2009. However, Toyota only managed to produce four million vehicles since January. continue reading…
