With over 1,500 titles vying to take places on CNN’s list of best video games this year, game publisher big names like Activision, Sony, and Nintendo proved to be forces to reckon with.

CNN launched its list of best games for this year, saying that game trends for 2009 included sequels, co-op play or games that allow players to collaborate instead of compete, social games or those free in social networking sites and fast-growing handheld games.

For the best shooter category, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 snatched the prize. The newly launched game, for 17 year-olds and above, runs on Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and PC. CNN described the game as a “gripping near-future military shooter.”

Uh-oh. After working so hard to sell their Wii consoles, Nintendo is reportedly scaling back their production.

According to news outlet Nikkei, this is because two Japanese companies involved in the manufacture of the Wii are facing heavy losses. The two companies—Mitsumi and Hosiden—are reportedly facing a 50 percent decrease in net profit. continue reading…

Wondering where the women video game players are? Check out the Nintendo side of things where there are reportedly more than 11 million female console players in the US.

At a BM Capital Market event, Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime presented research that showed there are 11.7 million female primary players as compared to 33.3 million male primary players in the US.
