Many have tried, but all of them have failed. And now, Sony Corp. is the newest kid trying to take over Apple Inc.’s block.

Citing unidentified sources, the Wall Street Journal said Sony is developing a line of handheld devices that would go head-to-head with Apple’s niche products, particularly the iPhone and iPad.

Much like the iPhone, Sony’s upcoming smartphone would have multimedia functions such as video gaming while its iPad equivalent would have the traits of a netbook, an e-reader and a portable gaming device.

Aside from those new products that would be launched later this year, Sony will also be launching this month a new online media platform initially called as Sony Online Service, which is being billed as its answer to iTunes.

The Sony Online Service will offer similar contents being offered by iTunes, but it is banking on its wider range of device matches, offering old game titles to get a step ahead.

Sony’s aggressive push toward Apple’s portable market is in response to its lagging mobile device business, and its Chief Executive Howard Stringer said the new products are at the heart of its turnaround plan.

While Sony is gearing for Apple’s market, Steve Jobs’ technology giant is also doing the same, eyeing the portable gaming industry largely occupied by Sony’s Playstation.

Well, Sony and Apple’s face-off should be a good thing for consumers. Let us just hope, at least for Sony’s sake, that its new line of products can really challenge Apple’s leadership so we can see quality hikes and price drops. (Grace R)

That Apple is a sneaky one. If a report on mobile device usage is true, the Cupertino, California-based company is training today’s youth who use an iPod touch to get an iPhone when they’re older.

From one of the fastest growing companies in the world, Dell is slowly losing its grip at the top.  Taiwan-based PC maker Acer has managed to supplant the Round Rock-based company as the second-largest PC builder in the world.

According to the third quarterly report by iSuppli, Acer has jumped over Dell to second spot with their computer shipments up with a 16.6 percent year-on-year growth. This is equal to almost 10.74 million PCs or 13.4 percent of the worldwide market of 79.9 million units. continue reading…

After a year-and-a-half of going at it on court, computer giant Apple and clone computer maker Psystar declared a ceasefire on their copyright dispute.

According to reports, Apple reached a partial agreement with Psystar, regarding the latter’s marketing of clone computers pre-installed with Apple’s Macintosh operating system.

Psystar has been marketing what it calls “Open Computers”, which are powered by Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard. Four months after the Doral, Florida-based vendor began selling its devices, Apple filed a copyright infringement suit in July 2008. continue reading…

Apple’s move to increase its share in the lucrative smartphone market in the US could take a different turn–specifically, a tie-up with German carrier Deutsche Telekom.

Financial website TheStreet.com said Apple could choose to snub Verizon Wireless, an early leader, in offering its popular iPhone. Instead, Apple may opt to take an “abrupt detour” and forge a deal with Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile.

AT&T is currently the exclusive distributor of the iPhone in the US, but complaints about AT&T’s unreliable iPhone services has led Apple to consider other options to return to the good graces of its unsatisfied customers.

Here’s a crazy idea: iPhone users are being trained to accept the idea of paying content online.

This idea was proposed by Jonny Evans of 9to5mac website based on the media law firm Olswang’s recently released 2009 Convergence Survey. According to Evans, Apple’s iPhone population is becoming a new target of opportunity for media firms because this particular group is happy to pay for digital content as compared to the wider online population.

As part of their survey, Olswang interviewed 1,000 adults and over 500 13-to-17 year olds about their digital habits. continue reading…

Don’t look now but iPhone is looming large on the horizon of Internet mobile platforms. But aiming to give some serious competition to the Apple product is Google’s Android.

The future of Internet mobile is becoming interesting if the data from mobile clearinghouse AdMob is any indication. According to their October mobile metrics report, iPhone/iPod Touch and Android phones took up 75 percent of mobile Web traffic in the US.

This data, based on mobile ad requests, was up from 65 percent the previous month. continue reading…

A little free time, an inquisitive mind and a soldering iron were all it took a 17-year-old teen, George Hotz, to unlock the iPhone. And if Hotz, now 20, could do it, a lot more have learned the tricks of the trade.

“It did take 500 hours, but thinking back to some of the stuff I’ve done now, the first iPhone was incredibly easy,” Hotz told CNN via phone interview.

Hotz, who just launched an iPhone hacking software called Blackra1n last month, is just one among the many ”specialists” who make up the underground iPhone jailbreak community. continue reading…

Computer maker Apple Inc. won the first round of its legal scuffle against computer vendor Psystar Corp.

Psystar, which sells computers pre-installed with Apple Macintosh operating systems, was sued by Apple for copyright infringement after the former announced it was selling “Open Computers” with Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard.

Psystar rose from relative anonymity in 2008 when it sold personal computers modified and configured to run Mac OS. In July 2008, Apple first filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Psystar, four months after the Florida-based vendor started marketing machines with Mac systems. continue reading…
