More than anything else, Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise. Stores, shops, malls, and other retail businesses are found in almost every street corner in the former Crown Colony. Langham Place, one of the city’s trendiest and busiest commercial complexes can be found in the Mongkok district. Mongkok has the highest population density in the world (130,000 per square kilometer).
Opened in 2004, Langham Place consists of a 15-level shopping mall, a five-star hotel and a 59-story office tower which is regarded as the 100th tallest building on the planet. The mall, in particular, is one of only two vertical-type shopping malls in Hong Kong, which due to limited land space has a multi-platform design instead of the conventional flat shopping mall.
Langham Place is an architectural and art marvel. Upon setting foot by the entrance, shoppers are greeted by a gargantuan rock pile facade known as The Rock, along with a nine-meter bronze sculpture, the Happy Man, created by American sculptor Larry Bell. The mall itself is sheathed in glass walls, providing panoramic views.
Inside is a mind-boggling mix of international and local lifestyle and fashion brands, dining outlets as well as a cinema. At the center of it all is the 200-meter-high Grand Atrium, which is highlighted by quirky, cone-shaped steelwork and the 83-meter-long Xpresscalators, the longest of its kind in Hong Kong.
From the 8th to 12th floors is The Spiral, called such due to its ascending ring-type layout, where many stylish restaurants are located. Interspersed along the floors is a fun-themed gallery of horoscope sculptures. At the mall’s summit is the Digital Sky, a light show projecting a medley of visualizations, from swirls to clouds, into the ceiling.
The 42-level hotel boasts of 665 rooms and suites, along with top-rate dining hotspots and services. Its Cantonese-themed Ming Court is a prestigious Michelin Star earner, while its luxury Chuan Spa is well-known already for incorporating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in its rejuvenation treatments. The hotel’s pool is also a stunner because of its exhilirating views of the Hong Kong skyline.
One of the nicest thing about Langham Place is the fact that the complex’s setting gives you an authentic feel of Hong Kong’s renowned hustle and bustle. Its Kowloon location gives an authentic experience of downtown liveliness; all around the mall are Mongkok’s legendary street markets and traditional food shops.
Unlike other leisure and shopping spots that give a rather cold, antiseptic feel to the Orient’s most fascinating slice of living, Langham Place offers a glimpse of the charming paradoxes that defines Hong Kong–contemporary yet age-old, chaotic but chic, lively but relaxing too. (Miles T)
