Stomach in ladies! Fashion’s most ancient torture device is cinching its way back into the runway and tiny waists. Here’s more: today’s corsets are not meant to be worn under but over.
Go ask Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and even Megan Fox, all three have been photographed with unbelievably smaller waists and perkier busts– all thanks to the restricting garment.
“If you are daring enough, you could pair a corset with leggings and go out clubbing or to a party. But they can also be worn in the boudoir,” says British fashion designer Alex Popa who has created corsets for Lady Gaga, Shakira, and Christina Aguilera.
Selfridges, a chain of high-end department stores in the United Kingdom, has reported a 70 percent increase in sales of luxury fashion girdles. Corsets barely stay on the racks even when stocks continue to come.
On the runway, bras, corsets, tap pants, and briefs were exposed all over the spring collections of Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano. Clearly, corsets and other undergarments are officially becoming outerwear.
This could only mean two things: either people are trying to save on clothes or, more are being sucked into a burlesque-inspired lifestyle. Helen Attwood , a store head buyer for lingerie agrees: “The trend for underwear worn as outerwear is more popular than ever with customers investing more in fashion that adds a touch of spice to everyday life.”
Although currently in fashion, women ought to be wary not to push the envelope too far. Wearing a corset at work? Not a good idea according to Linda Fargo who works at luxury goods department store Bergdorf Goodman in New York.
“Naturally, I’m not hoping to see a lot of inappropriate bare skin and literal lingerie showing in the workplace,” says Fargo.
Corsets could look glam or cheap depending on how it is worn. It is best to wear corsets over a white tee or under a nice jacket.
After all, a little bit of mystery is all the more seductive. (Lace L)
