In the field of movies and television awards, nothing is as fun as the ones where fans of horror, science-fiction and fantasy genres as well as comic-inspired feature films have their own say.
This is why Spike TV’s Scream Awards, which was recently held in Los Angeles, scored all the right notes during their awarding ceremonies. The Spike TV Scream Awards first came about in 2006 and was created by executive producers Michael Levitt, Cindy Levitt and Casey Patterson.
However, unlike the seriousness of the Oscars or the Emmys, the Scream Awards for this year had a Battlestar Galactica spaceship overhead, comic-book legend Stan Lee appearing in a bouquet of giant balloons, and hundreds of fans in horror costumes.
With fans voting online for the winners, the nature of the Scream Awards is more of a popularity contest. Because of this, most of the winners for the Scream Awards this year were big box-office hits and popular TV programs.
Topping the awards-list was the J.J. Abrams-reboot feature film Star Trek, which won the Ultimate Scream Award. It also won Best Sci-Fi movie and Best Director for Abrams. Meanwhile, Sam Raimi’s Drag me to Hell won Best Horror Movie while the movie Watchmen was cited as the Best Comic Book Movie.
On the other hand, HBO’s True Blood vampire series took the honors for Best TV Show, Best Villain for Alexander Skarsgard, Best Actor for Steven Moyer and Best Actress for Anna Paquin.
The teen vampire movie Twilight won four awards: Best Fantasy Film, Best Fantasy Actor for Rob Pattinson, Best Fantasy Actress for Kristen Stewart, and Best Breakout Performance for Taylor Lautner.
Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took Best Special Effects while Megan Fox was Best Sci-Fic Actress and Isabel Lucas was Best Breakout Performance as well.
Legends also took the stage to receive awards including Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards for the Rock Immortal Award, zombie director George A. Romero for the Scream Mastermind Award and Lee for the Comic-Con Icon Award.
And the presenters for the awards were no slouches in the big-names department. Those who appeared on stage to present the spike-shaped trophies included Johnny Dep, Quentin Tarantino, Tobey Maguire, Morgan Freeman, Jessica Alba, and Harrison Ford.
One of the highlights of the 3 ½-hour awarding ceremony was William Shatner (Captain Kirk of the original TV series Star Trek) going up onstage to accept on Abrams’ behalf the Ultimate Scream Award. (Joseph N)
